The setup

Saly itself is the calm part — warm sand, long walks, family water. That's on purpose: the beach house is the base, not the wave. For the real stuff we point the car north on the N1 toward the Almadies peninsula outside Dakar, where seven serious reefs sit inside a mile of coast.

Who this is for

Advanced surfers who read reef, and creators along for the ride. If you can drop in on a shallow right and paddle back out through set waves, you're home. If you brought a camera instead of a board, even better — the cliffs at Ouakam and the pirogues at Ngor shoot themselves.

The breaks

Tap a marker for the wave, the drive, the hazards. Home base is the pin in Saly.

Break by break

Distances measured from the beach house in Saly Portudal. Times assume no Dakar traffic — which is a lie you tell yourself once.

Logistics

Getting in

Fly into Blaise Diagne (DSS). It's 35 minutes south of Saly, not north near Dakar — which is the good news. We'll send a car.

Boards

Bring a shortboard for the reefs and something a touch bigger for Ngor Right on a real swell. Wax hard-tropical. Reef booties for Vivier and Ouakam are not optional.

Season

November through March. Harmattan winds go offshore, swell is consistent, water is 22–25°C. Boardshorts. No wetsuit.

Creators

Drone rules are relaxed but be smart around the fishing pirogues and the mosque at Ouakam. Golden hour at the cliffs is unreal.
